Vumela Fund Partnership Continues to Support High-Growth South African SMEs

Vumela Fund Partnership Continues to Support High-Growth South African SMEs. Strengthening South Africa’s small and medium enterprise sector through targeted support and innovative funding models remains central to efforts aimed at inclusive economic growth. FNB Business, working in partnership with small business development specialist Edge Growth, has continued to support high-growth SMEs through the Vumela Enterprise Development Fund since its launch in 2009.
The Vumela Enterprise Development Fund serves as the flagship collaboration between the two organisations. The fund provides innovative financing to black-owned “missing-middle” businesses, defined as enterprises that are too large for microfinance but do not meet the criteria for conventional bank lending. In addition to funding, beneficiaries receive post-investment support from Edge Growth.
Monabo Hygiene Services, a 100 percent black woman-owned cleaning services provider and an FNB supplier, illustrates the outcomes associated with the programme. Founded and led by chief executive officer Bongiwe Monakedi, the company has more than a decade of experience delivering services across Gauteng, the Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.
In early 2024, Monabo identified a growth opportunity that required additional liquidity. Through an Accelerate Loan of R800,000 from the Vumela Fund, the company was able to secure and execute a contract at the University of Pretoria. The contract demonstrated Monabo’s capacity to manage expanded operational requirements.
The company exited the Vumela Fund just over a year later after repaying the loan in full by June 2025. At the conclusion of the loan term, Monabo received reimbursement of all interest paid, following what was described as strong compliance and financial discipline.
Edge Growth Investee Compliance Officer Team Lead Tasneem Kader said the milestone reflected the company’s commitment to operational standards and responsible financial management. She noted that these principles continue to support the company’s growth trajectory.
Support from the Vumela Fund has also enabled Monabo to sustain and grow its employment base. The company’s approach to job creation includes supporting women’s progression from entry-level positions into management roles across multiple industries.
FNB SME business development support manager Palesa Moeletsi said the partnership with Edge Growth aims to provide more than access to capital. She said the collaboration focuses on combining funding with mentorship and strategic support for high-growth enterprises.
FNB Business and Edge Growth have highlighted collaboration, financial support, and ecosystem development as key elements in supporting SMEs. The partners continue to position the Vumela Fund as a mechanism for strengthening participation and growth within South Africa’s SME sector.
