South Africa Moves to Allocate R10bn to Cushion Consumers Against Fuel Price Hikes

South Africa Moves to Allocate R10bn to Cushion Consumers Against Fuel Price Hikes. South Africa has taken a step towards providing relief from rising fuel prices after Parliament’s Select Committee on Appropriations adopted the Special Appropriation Bill, which proposes allocating R10 billion to help stabilise fuel costs.

According to SABC News, the Bill authorises National Treasury to withdraw the funds from the National Revenue Fund and allocate them to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

The proposed allocation is intended to help cover fuel costs and shield consumers from price volatility linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which has contributed to a sharp increase in global oil prices.

The move comes after South African motorists faced significant fuel price increases earlier in the week, intensifying concerns about the impact of higher transport and energy costs on households and businesses.

Cosatu committee representative Mathew Parks called for the proposed funding to be used for its intended purpose, highlighting the potential effects of fuel price increases on consumers and the economy.

“We have seen the massive hikes yet again in the fuel price, and this fund, this money, should be utilised for its very purpose, which is to protect women and the economy. We should not just allow it to sit idle,” Parks said.

Committee chairperson Mmusi Maimane also indicated that the measure should provide immediate relief to consumers, according to the supplied report.

The proposed funding represents a government intervention aimed at addressing the effects of fuel price volatility during a period of heightened international oil market pressure.

However, the adoption of the Bill by the Select Committee on Appropriations does not mean that the funding has already been disbursed or that fuel prices have been reduced.

The Bill is expected to be tabled in the National Assembly for consideration. Further parliamentary action will determine the next steps in the legislative process.
