Meet South African Fintech wonder-woman, Raeesa Gabriels. Black women in the tech space are hard to come by. Black women in the South African fintech space are even rarer and so it is really exciting to learn of Raeesa Gabriels.
The techpreneur is shaking up the financial services industry by disrupting the conventional 30-day pay cycle and taking on exploitative payday lenders with her fintech solution, Level Finance. Gabriels’ money management platform allows employees to build wealth by enabling them to view their daily salary and offering them access to their pay when they need it. This empowers employees to save even before payday arrives.
Apart from pioneering the earned wage access industry in the country, Raeesa is also the only black female CEO operating in this space. In her Medium profile, she describes herself as a “curious, entrepreneurial gypsy and co-founder, trying to redefine collective meaning through impactful, social and ethical business in the fintech industry“.
With the economy in near ruins due to the Coronavirus pandemic, more families are experiencing more month than money in their households. Many employees have had to take salary cuts or support additional households and face ongoing financial hardship. This further puts them in a position to take loans from unscrupulous micro money lenders and illegal loan sharks.
Gabriels’ company comes in to rescue families and employees from such situations with her company which makes her the wonder woman in tech. She is definitely quite the entrepreneurial gypsy serving as an inspiration to a lot of women with her positive energy and hardworker mentality
