Pineapple is a brand founded by Matthew Elan Smith, Ndabenhle Junior Ngulube and Marnus van Heerden. Here are 10 things you shouls know about Pineapple.

  1. Pineapple set out to change big profit margins, heavy expenses and fraud
  2. It is underwritten by Old Mutual Insure.
  3. The Pineapple founding team  got together as part of an innovation competition run by Hannover-Re, during 2016.
  4. The Pineapple model has its roots in what is a traditional South African Stokvel, developed further to be decentralised, digital, completely scalable and fully comprehensive insurance cover. 
  5. In 2017 they started development of the systems, secured their seed funding as well as got licensed by the Financial Services Board.
  6. After presenting what would become Pineapple in Germany at the end of 2016 the team worked through the first half of 2017 to refine the business model.
  7. in 2018, Pineapple took on over 1000 early-access users who’s feedback helped them enhance the experience and build what people want as apposed to what they think they want. 
  8. After a few months of early-access and invite-only subscribers Pineapple launched open to everyone on July 27th, 2018.
  9. It handed out 35 000 Pineapple’s at intersections across SA to signal a fresh start to insurance as we know it.
  10. The initial service allows you to become a Pineapple member and cover the things you own with a snap of a picture.
