5 Trailblazing SA Women In Mining

The mining industry is experiencing an evolution in many of its aspects. For example, the empowering presence of women in this space has immensely expanded. Organisations such as, The Women In Mining South Africa  (WiMSA) was established to celebrate and offer support, in aspects of personal growth, career development and leadership towards women in the mining industry. It is a non -profit organisation, with 2,500 members. The running of the organisation is reliant on volunteers and sponsorships.

The 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining(GIWM) 2018 publication, acknowledged 16 women from the mining sector in South Africa. The outstanding ladies formed part of 100 from the 642 nominated women across the world, whose contributions were noted and honoured.

Chairwoman of WiMSA, Lindiwe Nakedi expressed the following, regarding the latest acknowledgement from GIWM:

“In South Africa very little is done to recognise the women who contribute to the mining industry so this has been an inspirational experience and pleasure to be recognised, especially internationally.”

Transformation and inclusivity has seen the light of day in most mining companies in South Africa. Although there are other areas that lack improvement, the rise of women owned mining companies and general female mining practitioners is on the up!

1. Thabile Makgala:

Thabile Makgala is an executive the mining division, at Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. and Chairperson Elect WiMSA.

2. Lindiwe Nakedi:

The much respected, mining practitioner, Lindiwe Nakedi is the owner and director of Gubhani Exploration and Chairperson WiMSA.


3. Nompumelelo Zikalala:
