Black Female Owned Skincare Brand Portia M Skin Celebrates 10 Years Of Existence! Portia M Skin Solutions is a privately black owned and managed; Centurion based company that was established in 2011 by Portia Mngomezulu. Portia M Skin Solutions is a Level 1 BBBEE contributor and a Proudly South African certified company. Its products are manufactured in a SABS ISO 9001:2015 certified facility that follows a Quality Management System. Pregnancy-related stretch marks inspired her to start selling marula oil. “This is a truly African product with the marula tree being native to the continent. The world needs to know of the immense healing benefits that marula oil offers all skin types.” Mngomezulu told Business Insider.
Its vision is to become a leading skin care and cosmetics brand in Africa and the world at large, specialising in quality skin care with locally sourced ingredients. It exists to harness the effectiveness of African indigenous oils for cosmetics use and to give its customers the best quality experience in skin care products. Its approach to harvesting the indigenous oils is environmentally conscious with a social aim of community upliftment empowering women and the youth in Africa.
According to Business Insider, by 2013, Mngomezulu quit her full-time job and expanded her range to include body lotions, face creams, and face washes – all clinically tested and approved. In 2015, Pick n Pay partnered with her through their Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) Programme and placed her products in 20 corporate and family stores, between 2016 and 2017 her sales jumped by nearly 2000% as the store list expanded nationally. She was also named Pick n Pay’s Small Supplier of the Year.
The brand is also very passionate about its community projects as it works with women and the youth in economic empowerment. The Portia M Foundation has been established and actively focuses on: Entrepreneurship, Social Responsibility, Youth Development and Mentorship.
This year the skincare brand celebrates 10 years of existence; this is a big milestone for the female entrepreneur as there aren’t many black female owned beauty brands that are thriving at the same level as the Portia M Skin brand as it is available internationally in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia.
