Impulse Biomedical Aims To Provide Effective Healthcare Technologies. Impulse Biomedical is multi-medical device development start-up based in Cape Town. It aims to provide effective, affordable and consumer driven technologies. At Impulse Biomedical it is believed that access to appropriate healthcare is a basic human right. Although it has made strides in improving access to healthcare, South Africa still lacks consistent universal access to affordable, high quality medical care. Impulse Biomedical envisions a world where researchers, advocates and professionals in the developing world provide solutions to problems that are unique to the environment. It is fuelled by its passion for people and enabling all to live their healthiest lives.

It aims to build the trust of consumers i.e. patients and clinicians by developing effective technologies to help save lives and reduce the impact of illnesses and chronic diseases on daily life. It strives to enter the medical device markets locally and globally to make healthcare technologies accessible to all. Its current focus is predominantly in the field of asthma and allergy.

The company has award-winning biomedical engineers rethinking medical practices for the betterment of those who need it most. It strives to create the most opportunities to affordable medical treatments on Earth. It exists to make people’s’ lives better by easing access to healthcare. The needs of the people is what excites it and drives its actions. The company uses biomedical engineering expertise to prioritise accessibility by rethinking medical device design.

The company was co-founded by Gokul Nair, who is a Mechanical Engineer (University of Cape Town), Biomedical Engineer (University of Cape Town) and Inventor. During his Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, Gokul developed a number of technologies, including a reloadable adrenaline auto-injector (known as the ZiBiPen) as well as a novel drill guide test rig for patella femoral ligament surgery.

The company was also co-founded by Giancarlo Beukes who is a Mechanical Engineer (University of Pretoria), Biomedical Engineer (University of Cape Town) and Inventor. During his Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, Giancarlo developed and invented a number of medical technologies in the fields of sports medicine, asthma, allergy, orthopaedics and public health for example: a knee joint ligament laxity measurement stress radiography device (now called the Laxmeter), a reusable sleeve attachment to enhance the usability of the standard metered dosage inhaler sleeve attachment, a needle and sharp crushing device for rural clinics etc.
