He is most well-known for his career on 5FM and Metro FM. DJ Fresh previously worked for YFM in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also worked for SABC Radio stations 5FM and Metro FM. During the 1990s, he released a series of South African house music records, mostly name Fresh House Flava. Different volumes of the compilations were released. DJ Fresh is also an astute businessman as he is considered to be one of the richest Radio DJs in the country. Below are some of the businesses owned by Sikwane.
Big Dawg Productions
Big Dawg Productions is a South African company set up in 1997 by Thato Sikwane (better known as DJ Fresh). It offers DJ/MC/radio/voice-over services, handles media compilation and marketing as well as event management solutions. The company has also established a scholarship programme for deserving and underfunded students and in 2008 opened an office in his home country of Botswana, managed by his brother, Tshepo ‘Rox’ Sikwane.
DJU
Sikwane formed part of a collective of DJs’, producers, media personality and musicians called DJU. Inspired by international conferences such as The Miami Winter Music Conference, DJU established the Southern African Music Conference in 2005 which held crucial talks for deejays and producers and DJs – it is a critical platform for Southern African dance music industry practitioners to keep pace with, and eventually lead global developments.
DJ Fresh Foundation
Through the DJ Fresh Foundation, he’s actively involved in educating a few deserving young people – previously disadvantaged kids are prioritised. They are enrolled annually in post-matric study scholarships at Boston Media House, Rosebank College or Monash South Africa. “The challenge in radio is to respect the power of the media. For a lot of radio deejays, once they’re in there, they forget it’s a powerful tool that can be an instrument of change. We need to maximise the good we can do.” Sikwane told Post Matric. “The one thing they drummed into us: your radio salary should be a quarter of your monthly income. That’s because there are so many spin-offs from being on a platform, from appearances to gigs to MC to motivational speaking.” Sikwane explained further.
