Bonang Matheba Highlights ‘Red Flags’ To Look Out For When Dealing With Agencies. The entertainment industry has a lot of different tasks that need to be done in an efficient manner if one wants to succeed and take their career and business to greater heights. For young entertainers, entering this space can be overwhelming as most of them do not have the knowledge that will help them manage their careers and businesses efficiently; this is why many opt for working with an agency that will help them navigate seamlessly in their career.
As much as there are agencies that are genuinely helping people in the entertainment industry, there are also other others that try to take advantage of the entertainers and end up exploiting them and thus keeping their careers stagnant. Last week South African media personality and entrepreneur Bonang Matheba announced in a Twitter space that she has terminated her partnership with her agency CSA Global. She explained that she terminated it due to the agency’s unsavoury business practices. In an interview with Times Live, Matheba highlighted the ‘Red Flags’ young people in the entertainment industry should look out for when they are dealing with agencies. Some of the points she emphasised are:
Matheba said that creatives should not allow their agency to review their business proposals but should always have their business proposals to be checked by their own lawyers.
She also said that creatives should not only have verbal agreements with their agency as they should put everything in writing. This is to formalise every agreement that has been reached as this will hold everyone accountable of what they are supposed to do. She also emphasised their agency should not be a making any decisions about their career or business without their knowledge.
Matheba adviced young creatives to be cautious of the agency’s attitude and how they handle their business.
She also shared that their agencies should not make them feel inferior or that their contributions are insignificant.
She explained that the bosses of the agency should not be trying to compete with the creative as this creates a working environment that is not professional and lacks boundaries.
