Founder Of ‘HD N3twork’ Happiness Mpase Shares How Vital Practical Experience Is In The Film And Television Industry. Every industry has its won way of doing things, some industries require the people who are entering it to have theoretical knowledge and practical experience, while others only demand one of the two. The film industry requires a person to have practical experience due to how the industry works, most of the work is practical work so therefore having practical experience becomes advantageous.
In an interview on The Hustler’s Corner with DJ Sbu, founder of HD N3twork Happiness Mpase shared how vital practical experience is in the film and television industry. She said, “As I am working in this space, I started by working in other people’s productions or projects, we would go shoot and not get paid. I just wanted to gain some experience. Sometimes I would get a call from someone asking me to help them with their shoot. They would ask that we help each other and once the movie is licensed, they would pay for my service. Once the movie is licensed, they wouldn’t get back to me. I registered my business in 2014 and I continued getting short term jobs at varied productions.”
Mpase continued to say, “I eventually became a production manager. I think because of the journey that I have taken and the experience and going through what I call the school of hard knocks made me realise that nothing makes up for experience. You know if no one actually gives you a chance to come work on set and experience it from that angle, it doesn’t matter how much theory you have gathered. The moment you start film school, also start working on projects because there is no producer that will hire someone inexperienced. A producer wants to work with someone who has been on set and they have exposed and understand how we work.”
The film industry is an industry that relies more on practical knowledge than theoretical knowledge as being on set and working efficiently and effectively requires a person who has worked on a set before. Mpase further emphasised that film producers on set need a person that already knows what to do as they also have a busy schedule and deadlines so they can not be working and teaching at the same time.
