Delivery Start-Up Swypa Delivery Shares The Challenges It Faces By Operating In The Township

Delivery Start-Up Swypa Delivery Shares The Challenges It Faces By Operating In The Township. In an interview with Multichoice Group, South African delivery start-up Swypa Delivery shared some of the challenges it faces by operating in the township. Operating in the township can offer unique challenges that most businesses can not survive but startups like Swypa Delivery bring innovative solutions to overcome these challenges.

The company said, “One of the challenges we faced as a delivery service in the township is that majority of our suppliers are in the informal market so now we have a big challenge of changing the supplier mindset from migrating from an informal establishment to a formal one in terms of having a more professional look of their offering, for examples packaging and payment methods. We want to them a position where they are able to compete with national franchises, so that one of the biggest challenges we are facing.”

Businesses in townships are usually small businesses as these are established by entrepreneurs who are just starting out in business or they have little to no capital to be able to expand their business. Due to this, most of these businesses therefore do not have the systems in place to formalise their business operations so that they can expand their business to cover areas outside of the township. Swypa Delivery aims to change how these businesses operate so that they can build a professional brand that will attract a lot of customers or investors.

These challenges can be overcome by showing these small business the benefits of them formalising their business operations, this will incentivise them to adopt certain methods of operations and discard the ones that are keeping them stagnant. Swypa Delivery can also introduce an initiative or workshop that teaches these businesses about how they can best formalise their business so that they can compete at a national level.
