South African entrepreneur and founder of Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA), Bulelani Balabala took to Twitter to highlight how difficult it is to be a black entrepreneur in South Africa. Balabala shares how Black entrepreneurs constantly encounter a lot of red tape in their business journeys.
The post read, “Being a black entrepreneur in South Africa is tough. The depression. The anxiety. The debt. The red tape. You will work your ass off for recognition in the market, and sometimes, you will do everything right but still lose. I am sending you love and light. Sisonke” Balabala understands that being a black entrepreneur is not a position that is favourable in South Africa as balvk entrepreneurs are not prioritised in terms of getting assistance or funding for their business, this is because of the large inequality gap that exists.
The inequality gap allows black entrepreneurs to start a business at a disadvantage as they have to work extra hard in order to achieve the same results as their white counterparts. The difficulty of securing funding as a black entrepreneur is very high as the majority of the funding is controlled white people who may not understand the problems that Black entrepreneurs solve as they are not informed about the problems that exists in townships, therefore they might not see the need to invest in a black owned business.
He highlights that black entrepreneurs can do everything right in terms of their business but fail to grow or scale it just because of their skin colour. Balabala encourages black entrepreneurs to keep going as he also understands the difficulties that they are facing as he is also an entrepreneur himself.
