Fashion Entrepreneur Matome Seshoka Details Why His Brand Focuses More On African Couture. Having a fashion brand that represents the place one is from allows the designer to tell their story through the pieces they design. This gives the brand a unique identity that people will be able to distinguish in any part of the world.

Since South Africa has diverse languages and cultures; designers can be influenced by any of the cultures to create beautiful clothing that represents a certain culture. This can be traditional wedding garments or any other clothing. In an interview with The Insider SA, fashion designer and founder of Antherline Couture Matome Seshoka shared how his brand chose to focus more on traditional African inspired couture. He said, “How I decided to do African traditional couture, it was not a conscious decision, when I got into the industry, I stared at school and the plan was just to survive, I tried ready to wear, I tried jeans, I tried t-shirts, I did everything and anything, matric dances and even white wedding gowns and the brand just kept on attracting more and more traditional weddings.”

Seshoka actually fuses the white wedding dress designs with African inspired designs to create unique looking gowns that will attract a lot of people who want their traditional wedding gowns to have an African influence but still remain modern. It’s best for an entrepreneur to find a niche market that they cater for as this will allow them to build a solid customer base that will support their brands because they genuinely love what the brand has to offer.

With the success of his clothing brand, Seshoka also announced that his brand is also venturing into selling homeware and crowns. “Sometimes you would give the client the dress and they go look for crowns and they don’t get a good crown. So we decided to launch crowns, so basically we do crowns that match their garments.” The brand seeks to celebrate African culture and the creatives behind it and show the world how innovative African designers are.
