“Always Be Selfish” – Nadia Nakai On Top Business Lessons
“Always Be Selfish” – Nadia Nakai On Top Business Lessons. In an interview with NINE80 MEDIA, SA rapper Nadia Nakai highlights the importance of putting one’s business needs ahead when entering a business deal, she advices entrepreneurs to be “selfish” as this will protect their interests and what they wanted to achieve out of a particular business deal or partnership.
She said, “I think business lesson number one that I could say is that you need to do things that are best for you, because when you go into a business partnership with any of these brands, you think that they love you, you think that they’ll do anything for you but if something were to hit the fan or something makes them upset, they will drop you right now and you will feel like you did this thing with them and you sacrificed so much for them and you know they’re supposed to have your back, believe me they won’t. They will change on you, so every decision that you make has to be with something you are happy with, makes you content and it has to be about you, you have to be extremely selfish with brands.”
She continued to say, “Be professional, make sure you meet your KPIs and all of that but make sure you are favouring yourself because you are the important brand, the collaboration is a plus 100% but the brand you are trying to build is yours. Don’t get yourself messed up because they will drop you.” The rapper is providing advice that will help entrepreneurs in the long term as these business lessons have helped her to be one of the most successful brands in South African hip hop.
Nakai has been in the South African music industry for a long time and throughout this time she has had brand collaborations with plenty of brands such as Redbat, Russian Bear and Reebok. These deals were instrumental in shaping how she approaches the business world and what works for an entrepreneur that is starting a small business. Entrepreneurs need to be extremely cautious about whose interests their business is serving and what kind of impact this will have on their business or brand in the future.
