How Agricultural Start-Up ‘SwaTsakani Farming’ Seeks To Inspire Black Females To Pursue Business Opportunities In Agriculture. SwaTsakani Farming was founded and is managed by Tsakani Mhlongo, the youngest daughter of the Mhlongo family who wanted to form a name for herself outside the shadows of her father. Her passion in farming has allowed her to follow in the footsteps of her Father, whose passionate reputation exceeds him in their community.

Tsakani has managed to establish and maintain the farm into a mixed farming operation; her aim is to inspire other women, youth into farming, exposing the multi-faceted nature of farming and the life of living on a farm towards a commercial level. Farming is a viable career and business opportunity that females need to explore due to the increase of support for black youth and females in the agricultural sector by government and private sector initiatives. There’s a growing interest to revive the status of indigenous food crops in South Africa and a group of urban, black, female farmers are determined to shake up this untapped market. This phenomenon is due to the fact that this sector needs to be grown to ensure that there are sufficient farmers operating viable farms contributing to the local economy and to facilitate skills and technology transfer to the next generation of farmers.

The success of this farm is evident in the variety of clients that it caters to from the local community to the Johannesburg market. With a passionate and knowledgeable team SwaTsakani is more than capable of growing diverse crops and running a poultry operation simultaneously because the diverse nature of this farm encompasses the atmosphere of a prolific mixed farming set-up.

The company’s mission and vision is to bring about meaningful transformation and sustainable development within the agricultural space while addressing the many social problems in the country such as youth development, unemployment, skills transfer and food security. It also seeks to increase the number of successful and sustainable black owned agribusiness operations, promote generational legacy, promote and facilitate the entry of young agri-preneurs into the commercial farming sector and to facilitate modern agricultural skills and technology transfer.
