From Setbacks to Celebrations: The Business Lessons Behind Kay Dee Creatives

From Setbacks to Celebrations: The Business Lessons Behind Kay Dee Creatives. Success in business is rarely a straight road. For Katleho Daisy Mofokeng, the founder of Kay Dee Creatives, the journey began not with certainty but with a difficult setback. Born and raised in Sebokeng, Katleho’s story reflects the resilience, creativity, and adaptability that aspiring entrepreneurs can learn from when building their own ventures.
A Career Interrupted, a Dream Sparked
After completing matric at Residensia High School, Katleho pursued her studies at Damelin Management School, where she obtained an Advanced Diploma in Secretarial Computing. Her professional career began at Iscor, now ArcelorMittal SA, where she rose through the ranks from admin clerk to dispatch coordinator and later to SHEQ administrator. In 2015, she further strengthened her expertise by earning a Safety Management qualification from Unisa.
Life seemed stable until the end of 2018 when Katleho lost her job. Despite sending out countless CVs, opportunities were scarce. It was in that difficult period that she made a bold decision: to create her own path. By 2021, Kay Dee Creatives was born, inspired by her family’s love for hosting memorable parties and her own passion for creating beautiful experiences.
Lesson for entrepreneurs: Sometimes a setback is the push needed to unlock your real potential.
Building Skills to Build a Business
Katleho understood early that passion needed to be matched with skill. She underwent training in floral arrangement, balloon styling, and gifting. These skills became the foundation for Kay Dee Creatives’ events management services, enabling her to stand out in a competitive industry by offering clients more than just basic décor.
Lesson for entrepreneurs: Invest in your skills. Competence builds confidence, and confidence builds a reputation.
Reinvention Through Candle Making
In 2023, Kay Dee Creatives expanded into a new venture: candle making. The line, named Light Up Your Life, featured moulded candles, scented jars, church candles, and other decorative pieces. The range was not only well received but also positioned the brand in a new market that complemented its events management arm.
This move highlighted Katleho’s belief in diversification. By expanding into products that aligned with her core brand values of creativity and celebration, she created multiple revenue streams while reinforcing the brand identity.
Lesson for entrepreneurs: Diversify in ways that strengthen your existing business instead of diluting it.

Strategic Marketing and Community Connection
Katleho built her brand by tapping into both word-of-mouth referrals and the power of storytelling. She positioned Kay Dee Creatives not only as a service provider but as a brand that adds meaning to life’s milestones. By creating products and experiences that connect emotionally with people, she fostered loyalty and built trust.
Her decision to add services and products based on feedback and market demand also shows the value of listening to customers. The success of the candle range is a testament to responding directly to what clients want.
Lesson for entrepreneurs: Marketing is not only about selling, it is about telling stories that resonate and listening to your audience.
The Power of Persistence and Vision
Katleho’s entrepreneurial journey has been defined by persistence. From being unemployed to running a growing events and lifestyle business, she demonstrates the importance of evolving with the times. She believes the sky is the limit and encourages entrepreneurs to remain open to expanding their horizons.
Her resilience proves that businesses are not static; they must reinvent themselves to stay relevant. With a new product launch on the horizon, Kay Dee Creatives continues to push boundaries and set new standards for small businesses in creative industries.
Lesson for entrepreneurs: Growth comes from constant reinvention. Do not settle, keep asking what’s next.

A Brand Built on Passion and Purpose
What sets Kay Dee Creatives apart is the blend of passion, skill, and strategy. It is not simply an events company or a candle-making business, it is a brand that thrives on bringing light, joy, and beauty into people’s lives. Katleho’s journey shows that even when doors close, determination and creativity can open new ones.
For entrepreneurs, the lessons are clear: start with what you have, build on your strengths, listen to your customers, and never stop reinventing. Success, as Katleho proves, is not about avoiding challenges but about transforming them into opportunities.
