SA StartUp Peo ya Phetogo Seeks To Develop Digital Skills Of Africans. Peo ya Phetogo (PYP) “the seed of change” is non-profit corporation which is passionate about the digital skills development of Africans. The company provides digital inclusion programs through skills development. Its programmes are designed to skill and reskill youth, schools, teachers and communities. Partnering with research experts, it also provides research services on digital inclusion impact and further develop tailored digital inclusion programs.
PYP was co-founded in 2016 by academics and has established several partnerships with civil society organisations, academic institutions, cooperates as well as government institutions to ensure inclusive and impactful programs. The following sections outline its program offerings.
The company’s Future Tech Clubs are technology clubs for children focusing on digital skills development. The clubs are a place where young children aged between 10-15 years, learn basic digital literacies and can further progress to advanced skills such as programming and robotics. The technology skills are then used to introduce problem solving skills considering contextual issues in communities. The clubs have their own unique names, and each club consists of an estimated twenty members and one leading mentor. Modeled around extra-curricular clubs, they are designed to be a hub fostering innovation and exposure to the world of Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM),
The PYP tech leaders program encourages the use of technology for social good through community based projects, advocacy and policy development. The program is designed to train and support 5 leaders who are in their final year of university studies or are early career graduates and exceptional community tech leaders (with no formal qualifications) from all provinces in the fields of technology. The program provides an online leadership in technology skills development with modules designed by leading women and men in technology and social inclusion. The fellows are then required to complete industry based “technology for good” projects working with leading technology partnering companies.
