How Mercy’s Company Seeks To Empower Women Through Agriculture. Mercy’s Company is dedicated to empowering women through agriculture. With over 12 years of experience, the company provides comprehensive training, employment opportunities, and support to women in the farming industry. Its sustainable practices, market access, and advocacy efforts foster a thriving and inclusive agricultural sector.
Mercy Tintswalo Baloyi, the Founding Partner of Mercy’s Company, is a social entrepreneur who embarked on her journey in 2012. Passionate about creating employment opportunities for her community, Mercy established Mercys Company in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to running the agricultural company, she simultaneously manages two other projects: one advocating against gender-based violence and another empowering women and young people.
Mercy’s Company not only focuses on cultivating and selling crops but also extends support to women interested in starting their own businesses, equipping them with practical farming skills. Mercy’s inspiration to make a difference in the community stemmed from witnessing the high unemployment rates in the Vaal Triangle area, where she moved in 2011. With vacant land that was previously a dumping ground, Mercy rallied local women and youth to clear it for agricultural purposes.
Through their collective efforts, they began growing and selling vegetables and millet in the local market. Mercy’s agricultural background, gained from her family and schooling, played a significant role in her ability to lead and excel in this venture. Having grown up in Mpumalanga, Mercy cultivated plants with her grandmother and mother. Agriculture has always been an integral part of her family’s lifestyle, and she recognized its potential to make a positive impact on the community she now serves
