Rhiza Babuyile and Johan Cruyff Foundation Launch Inclusive Cruyff Courts in South Africa

Rhiza Babuyile and Johan Cruyff Foundation Launch Inclusive Cruyff Courts in South Africa. Rhiza Babuyile, a prominent South African NPO, in collaboration with the Johan Cruyff Foundation, proudly unveiled two Cruyff Courts to mark a significant milestone in youth development and community empowerment.

Coinciding with the International Day for People with Disabilities on 5 December and the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, the courts provide a transformative space fostering inclusivity and addressing critical social issues.

The Cruyff Courts were inaugurated at two strategic locations:

  • Orange Farm, Gauteng, on November 28, at the Rhiza Agricultural Farm.
  • Vredenburg, Western Cape, on November 30, at Louwville High School.

These courts aim to provide safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces where children and youth, including those with disabilities, can engage in sports, develop life skills, and foster a sense of community. Alef Meulenburg, founder of Rhiza Babuyile, remarked: “This partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation is a game changer for our communities. These courts represent hope, inclusivity, and the opportunity for a brighter future.”

The Cruyff Courts are designed to meet diverse community needs:

  • Inclusive Access: Open to children of all abilities, promoting equality and social cohesion.
  • Mental and Physical Development: A space for growth, teamwork, and positive engagement.
  • Clean Water Infrastructure: Equipped with rainwater harvesting systems and boreholes providing safe drinking water.
  • School Integration: At least 10 local schools will benefit from supervised access.

Farid Gamei, Senior Project Manager of the Johan Cruyff Foundation, stated: “These courts are a catalyst for change, offering a safe space for children to experience the power of sport, build friendships, and tackle social challenges like gender-based violence.”

The project continues the vision of the legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff, who established the first international Cruyff Court in 2004. His daughter, Susila Cruyff, shared her father’s dedication to making sports accessible to all. The launch events included support from notable figures such as Kaizer Chiefs legends, representatives from the Netherlands Embassy, and corporate partners like Betway.

Through this initiative, Rhiza Babuyile and the Johan Cruyff Foundation demonstrate their dedication to:

  • Addressing Inequality: Providing resources to underserved communities.
  • Promoting Health and Well-being: Ensuring both physical and mental development.
  • Fostering Empowerment: Encouraging youth leadership and social activism.

Alef Meulenburg summed up the project’s ethos: “The Cruyff Courts symbolize our commitment to creating spaces where everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, can thrive.”
