From Kitchen Counter to Continental Shelves: The Rise of Masodi Organics

From Kitchen Counter to Continental Shelves: The Rise of Masodi Organics. In 2018, Liz Letsoalo embarked on a journey that would transform her kitchen experiments into a thriving beauty brand. Driven by a desire to create quality, thoughtfully made products that address the underrepresentation of black and brown individuals in the premium beauty space, she founded Masodi Organics. Named in honor of her mother, Masodi, the brand began with Letsoalo formulating hair care products on her kitchen stove during weekends while maintaining a full-time job.

Authenticity at the Core

Masodi Organics was built on the principle of authenticity. Letsoalo aimed to develop products that not only catered to specific beauty concerns but also resonated with consumers on a personal level. By focusing on natural ingredients and scientifically backed formulations, the brand sought to provide effective solutions while promoting self-acceptance and dignity.

Strategic Marketing and Retail Expansion

Understanding the power of visibility, Letsoalo leveraged social media to market Masodi Organics, creating an online store and promoting her products through various platforms. Her proactive approach led her to connect with buyers from major retail chains. In a notable instance, she reached out to a Clicks buyer via LinkedIn, flew to Cape Town for a meeting, and secured a deal to stock Masodi Organics in Clicks stores.

Further expansion saw Masodi Organics’ products available in Pick n Pay stores through their supplier development program. The brand’s presence grew beyond South Africa, reaching customers in Botswana and Namibia.

Resilience Amidst Challenges

The journey was not without obstacles. Securing funding proved difficult, with Letsoalo facing skepticism from potential investors. Despite these challenges, she persisted, reinvesting sales revenue into the business and eventually obtaining a loan from a funding agency to scale operations.

Her determination paid off, and Masodi Organics grew to employ a team of full-time and part-time staff, contributing to job creation and skills development within the community.

Innovative Approaches and Community Engagement

Masodi Organics continued to innovate, launching its first pop-up store in Cape Town’s Canal Walk in 2021. This initiative aimed to enhance customer engagement and provide immediate access to products.

Beyond business growth, Letsoalo remained committed to community development. She collaborated with youth placement organizations to train and upskill unemployed youth, fostering empowerment and economic participation.
