Shlobo Designs and the Remarkable Journey of Azande Ndebele

Shlobo Designs and the Remarkable Journey of Azande Ndebele. Azande Ndebele’s journey begins long before Shlobo Designs became known for its handcrafted beaded accessories and genuine leather bags. Her life has been shaped by unexpected twists, personal resilience and an unwavering commitment to people. Today Shlobo Designs reflects more than craftsmanship. It represents connection, culture and community, all deeply rooted in the meaning of its name. Shlobo is a Zulu word that describes a relative, a friend or anyone who stands within your circle. For Azande, this idea became the heart of her brand, guiding her path through difficult chapters and remarkable breakthroughs.
Finding Her Voice and the Power of Standing Out
Azande’s schooling years did not unfold in the way many would expect of a future entrepreneur. She repeated standard three multiple times due to language challenges, yet this period strengthened her determination. Everything changed at Queensburgh Girls High, where she became a prefect and discovered Toastmasters. This marked her first major turning point. Through speech, discipline and mentorship, she learned how to stand confidently in any room and communicate with conviction. Those skills would later open doors that shaped her business journey.
Her career path took an unexpected direction when she studied dental technology, but the fit was never right. She preferred people over clinical environments, conversation over routine. Leaving the field allowed her to follow opportunities that aligned with her personality. A brief stint as a waitress at the Holiday Inn introduced her to a Standard Bank manager who observed her natural ability to connect with guests. That encounter led to an 18 year career in banking, moving from sales teller to forensics. But even long term stability cannot shield anyone from life’s abrupt changes.
A Life Threatening Moment and the Turning Point That Redirected Her Path
Retrenchment ended her banking career and pushed her into temporary work in the mining sector. During a violent strike, she found herself trapped inside a car as a mob poured petrol over it. Just moments before the car was set alight, someone recognised her and called out her name. It was a woman she had once helped at the bank, whose grandmother needed emergency funds for an operation. The recognition saved her life.
This experience marked a profound turning point. Deeply shaken, she left the mines and returned to KwaZulu Natal. With no formal craft training but a strong desire to rebuild, she gravitated toward local women who worked in beadwork, pottery, sewing and traditional dance. Surrounded by artisans and community driven initiatives, she discovered both inspiration and purpose.
The Birth of Shlobo Designs Through Community and Creativity
Her work with local women led her to start extra mural activities at a school, aiming to keep children engaged and off the streets. She taught Latin American dance, witnessing firsthand how creativity could transform a young person’s confidence. This experience reinforced her belief that each individual holds a unique skill waiting to be unlocked.
Shlobo Designs grew from this environment of empowerment. The brand specialises in handcrafted beaded accessories and genuine leather bags that reflect cultures coming together. For Azande, bright beadwork is more than decoration. It sparks conversations, connects people internationally and proudly represents KwaZulu Natal and South Africa.
Her leadership philosophy focuses on people first. She conducts skills assessments to identify natural abilities and assigns roles accordingly. She believes excellence comes from passion, not pressure, and that wealth begins with the skills you create through your own hands.

Strategic Growth and a Global Vision
The brand’s growth has been driven by intentional collaboration. Azande partners with women she trains, as well as organisations she uplifts through motivational speaking and coaching. Her work with KZN Top Models South Africa highlights her focus on building confidence beyond aesthetics.
Despite challenges, including those brought by the Covid 19 pandemic, Azande trusted her instincts and made key decisions that led to significant opportunities. One notable moment was securing a major order from the KZN Department of Education.
Shlobo Designs now operates a shop in Dongguan, China, and maintains partnerships in Germany, Mauritius and hotels across South Africa. The brand’s unique vegetarian tanned leather designs have reached international stages, culminating in a silver award at the China Asian Expo, a milestone she views as a victory for South African entrepreneurship.
