Volkswagen Expands South African EV Line-up with Launch of Plug-In Hybrid Caravelle. Volkswagen Group Africa has introduced the new Caravelle eHybrid to the South African market, adding a plug-in hybrid variant of its premium people mover to its growing portfolio of new energy vehicles (NEVs).
Priced at R1.794 million, the Caravelle eHybrid combines a 1.5-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined output of 180kW and 350Nm. According to Volkswagen, this makes it the most powerful production Caravelle offered in South Africa to date.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain is paired with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system, which features an electrically driven rear axle designed to improve traction and distribute torque more effectively, particularly on surfaces with reduced grip.
Powering the electric component is a 19.7kWh lithium-ion battery, which Volkswagen says delivers an electric-only driving range of up to 95 kilometres. When combined with the petrol engine, the vehicle has a claimed total driving range of up to 700 kilometres.
Volkswagen said the Caravelle eHybrid has been developed for motorists who want to use electric power for everyday travel while retaining the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer journeys.
The vehicle can be charged at home, at workplaces or at public charging stations and is also capable of operating as a conventional hybrid when charging is not available.
The Caravelle eHybrid supports 11kW AC charging and 40kW DC fast charging. Under optimal conditions, Volkswagen says the battery can be recharged from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 26 minutes using a compatible DC fast charger.
Each vehicle is supplied with a 7.4kW AC Wallbox home charger, which the company says can fully recharge the battery in around five and a half hours.
Volkswagen said the launch forms part of its broader strategy to support the transition to electrified mobility in South Africa by introducing vehicles suited to local driving conditions and available charging infrastructure.
The company added that customer evaluation programmes involving the ID.4 and ID. Buzz Cargo have helped shape its local electrification plans by providing insights into charging behaviour, ownership expectations and commercial fleet requirements.
Standard features on the Caravelle eHybrid include IQ.Light LED Matrix headlamps, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist, Side Assist with Blind Spot Monitoring, a Harman Kardon 13-speaker sound system, three-zone climate control, electrically operated sliding doors, 17-inch alloy wheels and 30-colour ambient lighting.
The vehicle is sold with a three-year/120,000km manufacturer warranty, a five-year/100,000km Easy Drive maintenance plan, a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, and an eight-year/160,000km high-voltage battery warranty.
