Free State Unveils R120bn Investment Drive Targeting Industry and Jobs

Free State Unveils R120bn Investment Drive Targeting Industry and Jobs. President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced three proposed investment projects worth more than R120 billion as part of efforts to revive industrial activity, expand manufacturing and create employment in the Free State.
The Free State Catalytic Investment and Industrialisation Programme was launched at the Phuthaditjhaba Multipurpose Centre in QwaQwa on 9 October 2026. The programme includes projects in renewable energy, electric vehicle manufacturing and agricultural processing.
The largest is the proposed YJC renewable energy project, valued at approximately R100 billion. According to Ramaphosa, it has the potential to create 6,500 jobs.
The planned Joylong Automotive Manufacturing project represents an estimated R5.5 billion investment and is expected to create 1,500 direct jobs over five years. The project is expected to produce up to 8,000 electric vehicles annually.
A third project, the Walk of Life apple juice concentrate plant, represents approximately R330 million and is expected to create 100 permanent jobs and about 600 seasonal employment opportunities.
Ramaphosa said the projects could strengthen local value chains, increase productive capacity and expand opportunities for exports and employment.
He identified the Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone as an important component of the province’s industrialisation plans. The zone has sites for 65 factories, with 58% currently occupied, according to the President.
Ramaphosa said reliable electricity and water, functioning roads, safe industrial premises, efficient approvals and effective project management would be necessary to attract and retain investment.
He also called for greater participation by small and medium-sized businesses in industrial supply chains, including areas such as components, packaging, maintenance, transport and professional services.
The programme includes a skills development component. The President highlighted 130 learners who had received training through the Free State Development Corporation, the Unemployment Insurance Fund and Eskom.
Training covered areas including plumbing, construction road work, food and beverage, first aid and electrical systems management.
