Jay-Z’s Rare Bottle Of D’ussé Cognac Was Sold For $52 000 At An Auction! The billionaire rapper’s D’ussé Cognac sold for more than $50,000 at Sotheby’s over the weekend, with the money raised going towards his charity organisation, the Shawn Carter Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to mentoring students. The Grande Champagne Cognac, called “Bottle No. 1,” is a limited edition from 1969.
It’s stored in an opulent, diamond-shaped bottle with an engraved signature from the “Empire State of Mind” rapper himself. Champagne is generally regarded as a luxury drink; it is therefore not a surprise that a bottle that has the signature of one of the greatest Hip Hop artists would be selling at such a high price.
Forbes reported that the auction went live on March 1 with no reserve, so bids on the bottle started at $1, but Sotheby’s estimated sales would range between $24, 000 – $75, 000. The winning bid totalled a whopping $52,500. The person who bought the luxury bottle of champagne was not disclosed.
“When our Cellar Master, Michel Casavecchia, discovered the aged liquid at the Château de Cognac and explained how truly one-of-a-kind it is, it was important to me to honour it by doing something that would celebrate its singularity. Once that barrel is emptied, there’s no way the liquid can be recreated. The whole process behind the 1969 Anniversaire collection reminded me why I got involved in the spirits industry in the first place — to create something that will stand the test of time.” said Jay-Z in a statement.
D’ussé is made at the Château du Cognac and it is a subsidiary of Bacardi. D’ussé produces just two cognacs: D’ussé VSOP and D’ussé XO. D’ussé VSOP is aged at least four and a half years in the Château de Cognac cellars. The bold, yet remarkably smooth character of D’ussé Cognac was founded by Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter and conceived by the senior-most cellar master working today, Michel Casavecchia. One of the world’s greatest authorities on Cognac, he has been curating spirits for more than 20 years at the prestigious Château du Cognac. This 200-year-old venue, one of the oldest Cognac houses in France, is where Casavecchia created D’ussé.
