Social media giant Facebook also announced that it has changed its name to Meta. The company took to Twitter to make the announcement, the post read, “Announcing @Meta — the Facebook company’s new name. Meta is helping to build the metaverse, a place where we’ll play and connect in 3D. Welcome to the next chapter of social connection. The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. It’s a collective project that will be created by people all over the world, and open to everyone. You’ll be able to socialize, learn, collaborate and play in ways that go beyond what’s possible today. The names of the apps that we build—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp—will remain the same.”

The company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so it is changing its name to reflect its commitment to this future. The company is already developing exciting new technologies that will help people connect and explore in the metaverse. The metaverse will be a collective project that goes beyond a single company. It will be created by people all over the world, and open to everyone. In a statement the company also said that its corporate structure is not changing, however, how its reports on its financials will. Starting with its results for the fourth quarter of 2021, it plans to report on two operating segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs.

When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect, apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology.
