SA Heritage Sites Showcase New Ultra-Trail Running Partnership

SA Heritage Sites Showcase New Ultra-Trail Running Partnership. Trail running is the world’s fastest-growing sport, and an expanded partnership is set to showcase two of South Africa’s most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the global sporting stage. Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and Summit Events announce the expansion of its strategic partnership, with the inclusion of RMB Ultra-trail Drakensberg.

The partnership includes RMB Ultra-trail Cape Town, scheduled for November 22-24, 2024, with RMB Ultra-trail Drakensberg set for April 25-27, 2025. These races will challenge elite athletes and offer all participants the opportunity to experience South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes in a unique and exhilarating way.

Notably, the partnership showcases two of South Africa’s most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Table Mountain and the Maloti Drakensberg Mountains, offering runners an exceptional opportunity to experience these natural wonders on foot. “This partnership represents a significant milestone in positioning South Africa as a premier destination for ultra-trail running,” said Alison Badenhorst, RMB Chief Marketing Officer. “RMB is proud to see our partnership and the sport of trail running growing. We believe in the potential it has to unlock talent.”

The economic impact of these events is expected to be substantial. The RMB Ultra-trail series is projected to attract thousands of international participants and supporters, significantly boosting tourism revenue in Cape Town and the Drakensberg region. “We anticipate these events will inject millions of rands into the local economies,” noted Stuart McConnachie for Summit Events. “Beyond the immediate economic benefits, the global exposure will have long-lasting effects on our tourism industry, highlighting South Africa as a must-visit destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.”

The rise of ultra-trail running has rocketed, with the sport seeing double-digit growth rates annually. Its popularity stems from a unique combination of extreme physical challenge, mental fortitude, and a deep connection with nature. Unlike traditional marathons, ultra-trails take runners through diverse terrains and ecosystems, offering amore immersive and adventurous experience.

“Ultra-trail running isn’t just a sport; it’s a journey of self-discovery,” explains McConnachie. “Our courses through Table Mountain and the Drakensberg will push runners to theirlimits while surrounding them with some of the most awe-inspiring scenery on the planet. From the iconic flat-topped Table Mountain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to the jagged peaks and hidden valleys of the Drakensberg, these routes offer a true test of endurance and willpower.”

The events are expected to play a crucial role in boosting sports tourism in South Africa. By attracting a diverse international field of competitors and their supporters, these events will showcase South Africa’s capacity to host world-class sporting events while highlighting its natural wonders and rich culture. Badenhorst says, “These events will not only boost local economies but also provide in valuable exposure for its surrounding communities. The events are known for local community participation that shows visitors from around the world the warmth and diversity of South African hospitality.”

Environmental conservation will be a crucial focus of both events. The organisers have committed to implementing stringent measures to minimise the ecological impact, ensuring the preservation of these UNESCO World Heritage Sites for future generations. This includes strict waste management protocols, the use of biodegradable materials, and partnerships with local conservation groups to promote environmental awareness. “We’re not just running through these landscapes; we’re becoming stewards of them,” says McConnachie. “By fostering a deep appreciation for these natural wonders among participants, we hope to create a ripple effect of conservation awareness that extends far beyond the races themselves.”

As ultra-trail running continues to gain momentum worldwide, South Africa is poised to become a leading destination for the sport. The combination of challenging terrain, stunning landscapes, and world-class organisation positions these events as potential fixtures on the global ultra-trail calendar. “What sets these South African ultra-trails apart is the sheer diversity of the terrain. Runners will experience everything from technical mountain trails to expansive grasslands, all while being surrounded by unique flora and fauna. It’s this variety that makes these courses both challenging and unforgettable,” says Badenhorst.
