CapeRay Medical Is A Company Aimed At Developing Technological Solutions To Detect Breast Cancer. CapeRay Medical (Pty) Ltd is a privately held company based in Cape Town, South Africa, that develops, manufactures and supplies medical imaging equipment for the diagnosis of breast cancer. The company was originally formed as African Medical Imaging (AMI) as a joint venture between De Beers and the University of Cape Town (UCT). It subsequently spun out from UCT in 2010 and CapeRay was launched, with a major investment by the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa.

CapeRay has developed a novel imaging system known as Aceso – named after the Greek goddess of healing – that brings a dual-modality approach to breast cancer screening, combining low dose digital x-rays and automated breast ultrasound in a single system. Aceso thus provides complementary information for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, especially in women with dense breast tissue.

CapeRay received certification to the quality management standards, ISO 9001 and ISO 13485, from SGS United Kingdom. The CE mark was also awarded for the Pandia digital X-ray camera, in compliance with Directive 93/42/EEC on medical devices. The company won an Innovation Award from the National Science and Technology Forum and successfully tested Soteria, its digital mammography system, in a clinical trial at Groote Schuur Hospital.

The Aceso system, incorporating both full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), was successfully tested in a clinical trial at the University of Cape Town. There were 51 healthy volunteers and 7 patients with biopsy-proven breast cancer who participated, enabling CapeRay to demonstrate the considerable potential of dual-modality imaging.

The engineering staff at CapeRay uses their creative skills to design, build and test the Aceso platform for the early detection of malignant cancer in dense breast tissue. The benefits to patients and doctors include: earlier diagnosis of breast cancer; greater potential for saving lives; reduced breast compression; greater patient throughput; lower radiation dose; and reduced capital outlay. Management believes CapeRay’s technology could allow an investor to exploit the strong and growing market for breast imaging.
