Businesses Owned By South African Billionaire Johann Rupert. Johann Peter Rupert is a South African-born entrepreneur, who is the eldest son of business tycoon Anton Rupert and his wife Huberte. He is the chairman of the Swiss-based luxury-goods company Richemont and the South Africa-based company Remgro. As of 1 April 2010, he assumed the CEO position of Compagnie Financiere Richemont. He is estimated to be worth R77. 8 Billion and is ranked as the second wealthiest person in South Africa on the Forbes list of The World’s Billionaires of 2021. Remgro

Through Remgro, Rupert has investments in the financial, healthcare, consumer products, industrial, infrastructure, media, and sports industries. Remgro Limited is an investment holding company based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It has interests in banking, financial services, packaging, glass products, medical services, mining, petroleum, beverage, food and personal care products. In 2015, Forbes listed Remgro as the 9th biggest publicly traded company in South Africa and 1436th in the world.

Richemont

Compagnie Financière Richemont SA, also known as Richemont, is a Switzerland-based luxury goods holding company founded in 1988 by South African businessman Johann Rupert. Through its various subsidiaries, Richemont produces and sells jewellery, watches, leather goods, pens, firearms, clothing and accessories. Richemont is publicly traded as CFR on the SIX Swiss Exchange and the JSE Securities Exchange.

RCL Foods

Founded in 1960 as Rainbow Chicken Ltd, the company has its headquarters in Westville near Durban, and employs over 20,000 people. RCL is 77.1% owned by the South African investment firm Remgro. In 2017 the company announced it would be cutting its workforce by 1,350 people due to increased chicken imports into South Africa from Europe and the US following the signing of trade agreements with them.

Mediclinic International

Mediclinic International plc, founded in 1983, is an international private hospital group with operations in South Africa, Namibia, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. The Group’s head office is based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It has been listed on the JSE, the South African securities exchange, since 1986. It is also listed on the London Stock Exchange and its is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. Mediclinic International was founded in 1983 in Stellenbosch, South Africa when its current chairman, Dr Edwin Hertzog, was commissioned by the then Rembrandt Group (now Remgro Group) to undertake a feasibility study on how profitable private hospitals could be.
