How Safety And Security App Eyerus Aims To Help Solve Contact Crime And Gender Based Violence. In a world that is technologically driven, Eyerus was created to use existing technology to help solve one of the biggest pandemics in South Africa – contact crime, which includes sexual violence, rape, assault and Gender Based Violence.
The app was co-founded by Sibusiso Mbhele, as he saw that with almost every South African using a smartphone, the smart thing to do was to create a mobile app designed to provide personal safety for everyone needing the freedom to live without fear, in a society gripped by crime.
Eyerus is an automated algorithm that provides personal safety and security in the palm of one’s hands. People can now move with safety and freedom anywhere, at any time, without fear. With a virtual companion like Eyerus, people will never walk alone but within an ecosystem created to improve security for individuals, businesses, and communities. Eyerus is not just an app, it is a technological gateway in combating contact crime such as sexual violence, rape, hate crime and Gender Based Violence creating a safer society for all.
Eyerus enables people to indicate how safe or unsafe they feel in their current surroundings through the use of four safety status modes – green alert mode for when they feel totally safe; amber alert mode for when they feel uneasy and intimidated; red alert mode for when they are in escalated danger; and finally blue alert mode immediately dispatches private security services to their location. These safety status modes enable loved ones to know whether their relatives are safe and assist them when they need it most.
The app has a feature that is called ‘Dead Man Trigger’, this feature is designed for those unpredictable moments one feels highly exposed i.e. walking from their office building to their car alone at night. People can simply place their finger on the 10 second countdown trigger and once released, the countdown begins. Should they not enter their unique code, Eyerus will escalate to blue alert mode, which automatically dispatches private security and activates live streaming.
