How Computing Start-Up Cognitive Systems Aims To Provide Cognitive Computing Solutions. Cognitive Systems specialises in Cognitive Computing based on Marvin Minsky’s Minsky’s “Society of Mind” theory, according to which human intelligence arises from the interactions of simple parts which are software agents, which are themselves mindless.

The interactions of these agents constitutes a “society of mind” in which a subset of the agents form a A-Brain that connects to the outside world, and a subset of agents form a B-Brain connected to the A-Brain to understand what is happening in the A-Brain. The company deploys “Artificial Minds” consisting of software agents organised into A-Brains and B-Brains in complex environments with high-frequency sensor or data streams using AME (Artificial Mind Engine).

The Artificial Minds consist of A-Brains and B-Brains. A-Brains are embedded in complex environments by Collector Agencies that “gather” data such as market streams, sensor streams, event streams, video streams, etc. and filter these events into complex event streams containing only events of interest. The B-Brains are implemented by Bayesian Agencies and the Competence Agencies – they observe, learn from, reason about and understand what is happening in the A-Brain and achieve cognitive competencies. The Bayesian Behaviour Networks are distributed cause-effect models, used by the Competence Agents to achieve cognitive competencies.

“The Artificial Mind Engine helps us to uncover Perishable Insights as they happen – to act upon trends, risks and opportunities (business/life situations), and harvest actionable insights at a moment’s notice.” Anet Potgieter, Founder of Cognitive Systems said on the company’s website. The company takes a very different approach to the industry standard for Machine Learning as it aims to bridge the gap between what a machine sees and learns, and how humans interpret the world around them, by using Collective Intelligence to integrate these perspectives.

Cognitive Systems enables Collective Intelligence to reveal trends and patterns related to the behaviour of Humans and Things, and the interactions amongst themselves and their environment. It also developed COGS, societies of software agents acting together to achieve Collective Intelligence, much like an ant colony searching for food.
