Turning Fear into Safety: How Izipho Zokuphila Tracking Became a Lifeline for Women and Children

Turning Fear into Safety: How Izipho Zokuphila Tracking Became a Lifeline for Women and Children. When Durban University of Technology students Simphiwe Ntuli and Siyabonga Mgadi saw headlines about gender-based violence and human trafficking, they didn’t just sit back. They acted. In 2017, they launched Izipho Zokuphila Tracking, a brand that turns stylish fashion accessories into life-saving devices, with a panic button, GPS tracking and 24-hour emergency response.
From Design to Emergency Response
The founders focused on creating wearable safety solutions, trackable watches disguised as fashion, but equipped with GPS, panic buttons and access to a tactical response team that includes a retired SAPS Hawks captain. The goal? To offer discreet protection for women and children without sacrificing style or privacy.
Their intention goes beyond accessories. Their mission is deeply rooted in community safety.
Winning Recognition and Funding
A key moment arrived when Izipho Zokuphila Tracking won Best Innovator at the 2022 SAB SHARP Awards, taking home R500,000 in funding. That recognition validated their vision and elevated their credibility, making it easier to connect with partners and customers alike.
As Siyabonga reflected, the journey was not always smooth. “We had to close down the business due to lack of knowledge,” he admitted. But perseverance paid off. When they revived the business later in 2022, the media coverage and public interest confirmed they were making a meaningful impact.
Growing the Brand and Meeting Demand
Early on, demand outpaced supply. The founders faced challenges scaling, “The demand is high, but the supply is low,” Siyabonga said. Yet, this only motivated them to strengthen their operations and expand their footprint across provinces.
Beyond individual protection devices, Izipho Zokuphila also offers intelligent fleet and vehicle tracking solutions, blending their personal safety tech with broader tactical operations.
