South African media personality Carolyn Steyn took to her social media platforms to share how her husband, Douw Steyn was able to turn a dream of building a city into reality. She also shares that she was very skeptical of the idea as it seemed farfetched that this could be accomplished.
The post read, “About twenty years ago my husband started speaking about ‘building a city’. I thought he was out of his mind. He would summons architects to come to the Saxon where we were living at the time, to go through mounds of plans. Sometimes people like Bill Clinton or Nelson Mandela would be present and I would gently explain to them that Douw was talking utter rubbish. I mean, how does one man build an entire city?! And the idea of calling it ‘Steyn City’ to my mind was just preposterous. But you see, I don’t have the genius and vision of Douw Steyn. And my imagination doesn’t stretch like his does. Today we took a drive around Steyn City. It’s here. It is real. It’s alive. It’s vibrant. It’s mushrooming out of the ground. It’s beautiful. Steyn City is actually four times the size of Monaco. And it is all because one man decided to action his dream into reality.My husband is an utter genius and I cannot feel more proud of him.”
In 2015, South African billionaire businessman, the founder of BGL Group, Douw Steyn launched the development of a luxury private estate, Steyn City, on a 900-hectare (2,200-acre) site between Fourways and Lanseria in Johannesburg. The project initially drew R6.5 billion in investment, with a further R5.5 billion invested in 2019. Douw Steyn, was guided by the dream of creating a space where people could live as they did before the frenetic age of the internet and the dominance of the cars in people’s lives. He determined that Steyn City would be a place where families could live with complete peace of mind, spending time together in an environment that encourages activity and where cars no longer restrict movement.
Douw Steyn is a visionary entrepreneur that was able to dream beyond his reality, he was able to see and build something that isn’t very easy to achieve. His wife states that he began playing with the idea of building a city in his head around 20 years ago, which shows that he had to really work hard throughout all these years and be determined to make his dream a reality. Not a lot of people can endure taking on such a massive dream as it requires a lot of sacrifices in order for it to be done. Carolyn Steyn understands this, hence she has decided to show how proud she is of him as he has fulfilled his dream of building a city named after him.
