Applications for the 2025 SAB Foundation Social Innovation and Disability Empowerment Awards are now open

The SAB Foundation is calling on South Africa’s visionary social entrepreneurs, to apply for its Social Innovation and Disability Empowerment Awards, a premier programme that fuels impact-driven solutions addressing some of the country’s most pressing social challenges.
Recognised as one of the most sought-after social innovation awards in South Africa, this annual programme provides a critical springboard for up to 25 high-impact innovators, offering grant funding between R300 000 and R1.3 million along with tailored business development support, expert coaching, and technical assistance.
Scaling solutions for sustainable impact
For over 14 years, the SAB Foundation has identified and supported entrepreneurs who are transforming communities through scalable, sustainable businesses. The programme specifically seeks solutions that improve the lives of:
- Women and youth in low-income communities
- People living in rural areas
- Persons with disabilities
“We are committed to identifying South Africa’s most promising changemakers and equipping them with the resources and support to turn bold ideas into scalable, life-changing solutions,” says Itumeleng Dhlamini, Head of Programmes at the SAB Foundation. “This is more than just a funding opportunity—it’s an ecosystem of support designed to accelerate innovation and drive real change in our social and economic landscape.”
Spotlight on past successes
Over the years, the programme has propelled entrepreneurs across key sectors, including healthcare, transport, energy, education, and financial inclusion.
One such example is Mapha Logistics, founded by Loyiso Vatsha, a 2021 Social Innovation Award winner. His logistics company addresses transport challenges in underserved communities, demonstrating how early-stage ideas can evolve into thriving businesses that drive job creation and economic inclusion.
The Disability Empowerment Awards continue to champion innovations that enhance economic opportunities for persons with disabilities. The 2024 winner, Vusmzi Initiative, introduced a sustainable apiculture and agriculture model, unlocking socio-economic opportunities for people in remote areas.
Similarly, iSchool Africa, has expanded educational access for students with disabilities through user-friendly technology solutions—showcasing the SAB Foundation’s commitment to supporting impactful ventures that promote inclusion and empowerment.
Innovator Hunt Challenge: Help us find South Africa’s brightest innovators
In addition to the open call for applications, the SAB Foundation has launched the Innovator Hunt Challenge, an interactive campaign encouraging the public to nominate deserving innovators.
“We know that some of South Africa’s most brilliant social entrepreneurs don’t always have direct access to funding opportunities. That’s why we’re inviting every South African to be part of the search,” adds Dhlamini. “By nominating an innovator through our social media channels, you can help us uncover hidden talent and support the next wave of changemakers.”
