Building Healthier Communities: The Lessons Behind Dr. Hajira Mashego’s Fitness Junction

Building Healthier Communities: The Lessons Behind Dr. Hajira Mashego’s Fitness Junction. When Dr. Hajira Mashego walked away from her secure job as a physiotherapist at the National Department of Health in 2017, she was not just making a career shift. She was betting on a vision that few had dared to pursue: bringing accessible, affordable fitness facilities to peri-urban and township communities in South Africa. Today, her brand Fitness Junction is not just a gym. It is a model of community-driven wellness and entrepreneurship.
From Inspiration to Action
Dr. Mashego’s inspiration came from her late father, one of South Africa’s first black physiotherapists, and her mother, a retired occupational therapist. Surrounded by healthcare role models, she understood early on the value of wellness in transforming lives. After completing her PhD, she noticed a gap: people in peri-urban and rural communities had little to no access to gyms. To stay fit, they had to travel long distances, which was a barrier for many.
Instead of treating the problem as inevitable, she turned it into an opportunity. Using her pension savings, she established the first Fitness Junction facility in West View, Pretoria West. It was a bold step, one that required both courage and strategy.
Building More Than a Gym
Fitness Junction set itself apart by offering more than just gym equipment. It combined health and convenience into one ecosystem. The facility features a cardio area, aerobics and spinning studios, a weight training section, a boxing area, and even a juice bar. Beyond exercise, clients also have access to in-house physiotherapists, biokineticists, and dieticians.
One of the most innovative ideas was introducing a free childcare facility, ensuring parents could focus on their workouts without worry. This small but powerful feature reflects the brand’s ability to understand and respond to its community’s real needs.
Learning to Lead a Business
While Dr. Mashego had deep expertise in health, she openly admitted that running a business was a new challenge. To strengthen her skills, she joined the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise Programme. This 18-month mentorship initiative gave her the tools to refine her operations, manage finances effectively, and scale with sustainability in mind.
The programme not only equipped her with practical knowledge but also provided her with mentorship and emotional support. By the end of her journey, she was awarded the prestigious SAB Foundation Tholoana Award as well as the Collaboration Award, recognizing her willingness to take risks and unlock new opportunities.

The Turning Point Toward Expansion
Winning the SAB Foundation awards was a critical turning point. With R10,000 in funding and the credibility of the awards behind her, Dr. Mashego was able to solidify her plans for growth. Instead of limiting Fitness Junction to one community, she envisioned scaling across South Africa through a franchise model.
Her plan is bold yet grounded. By expanding into 232 townships nationwide, Fitness Junction has the potential to employ 16 people in each facility, creating more than 3,700 jobs for young people. This positions the brand not only as a gym but as a catalyst for social and economic change.
Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
The rise of Fitness Junction offers several actionable lessons:
- Turn personal experience into opportunity: Dr. Mashego’s understanding of health inequities inspired a solution-driven business. Entrepreneurs can look at the problems around them and reframe them as opportunities.
- Invest in skills and mentorship: Recognizing her own knowledge gaps, she sought structured guidance, proving that humility and learning are critical to growth.
- Build around community needs: From affordable rates to childcare services, Fitness Junction succeeds because it listens to the people it serves.
- Think beyond profit: Her franchise expansion plan combines business growth with job creation, making it a socially impactful model.

The Road Ahead
The future of Fitness Junction is ambitious but deeply necessary. As the brand expands, it is set to transform the fitness landscape for South Africans living in townships and rural areas. By focusing on accessibility, inclusivity, and innovation, Dr. Hajira Mashego has created a blueprint that other entrepreneurs can adapt in their own industries.
