From Six Caps to a Movement: How the Kau Twins Built RE-L8 into a Force in South African Fashion

From Six Caps to a Movement: How the Kau Twins Built RE-L8 into a Force in South African Fashion. On a campus in 2016, a small idea stitched together friendship, ambition, and style. Bonang and Duduetsang Kau, known as the Kau Twins, had no grand fashion empire in mind when they printed six caps for friends hosting an event. Yet those caps sparked conversations, caught eyes, and drew unexpected demand from peers and strangers alike. That sudden interest was the first thread in what would become RE-L8, a youth-owned clothing brand rooted in innovation, community, and local manufacturing.

The Spark That Started It All

What sets RE-L8 apart is not just its products, but the intention behind them. From the outset, the Kau Twins envisioned clothing that does more than look good. Their designs solve problems and double in purpose, like the Side Bag Jacket, which converts from outerwear into a carry bag. This functional fashion philosophy positioned the brand as fresh, inventive, and relatable to a generation looking for more from what they wear.

Building from the Ground Up

Starting a clothing brand as students is no easy feat. The Kau Twins began with no large-scale resources, just a clear vision and determination. They reinvested early earnings to meet growing demand, quickly registering RE-L8 as a formal business. Over the years, they transformed from printing small runs for friends to operating a mini factory, employing young people with a shared passion for clothing manufacturing.

By sourcing materials locally, they reinforced their commitment to supporting the South African textile economy while ensuring quality control. They also expanded into manufacturing uniforms and merchandising for schools, companies, and other brands, creating multiple income streams beyond retail fashion.

Milestones That Marked the Journey

Each step in RE-L8’s growth reflects deliberate, strategic scaling. In 2021, the brand reached a turning point with the opening of its first physical store at 61 Steen Street in Rustenburg. This move not only created a visible presence but also allowed customers to connect directly with the brand’s story and craftsmanship.

Two years later, in 2023, they launched their second store at the popular Ten Flags Theme Park, broadening their reach to a family-friendly, high-traffic location. That same year proved to be a defining moment: RE-L8 was voted Most Innovative SMME at the National Presidential Pitch for Funding Competition and took first place at the Standard Bank Pitching Competition in Rustenburg. These accolades validated their business model and strengthened their credibility with customers and investors alike.

In 2024, they hosted their Winter Fashion Show, signaling their readiness to play on a bigger stage in South African fashion.

A Mission Larger Than Fashion

The Kau Twins have always positioned RE-L8 as more than a brand, it is a social movement. Their mission is to collaborate with individuals from different disciplines, using the brand as a platform to help others achieve their dreams. This community-driven approach extends to their long-term vision: building a full-scale clothing manufacturing factory to revive South Africa’s local manufacturing industry, train people in high-quality garment production, and compete internationally.

The Kau Twins prove that with creativity, purpose, and resilience, a small student project can become a brand that stands for much more than clothing.
