What began as a small initiative with a heated pool at the front of her mother’s house has grown into a thriving enterprise serving hundreds of swimmers each week. A Dream That Started at Home

Rushana’s path to entrepreneurship was fueled by a deep desire to serve her community. Before starting her own venture, she worked as a swimming instructor at a suburban school. While she enjoyed teaching, she noticed a gap: children in her own neighborhood of Mitchells Plain did not have access to swimming lessons. Determined to change this, she looked for ways to build something local.

Her mother became her first investor, supporting her dream both emotionally and financially. Then fate intervened when she won a bakkie in a competition in 2011. Selling it gave her the capital to invest in her very first swimming pool. By February 2012, Little Mermaids opened with 35 swimmers enrolled.

Learning the Business Side

Starting a business was not without challenges. While Rushana had the passion and technical skill for teaching swimming, she quickly realized that running a business required a different set of skills. She struggled with administration and finances at first, admitting that she lacked knowledge in this area.

Instead of letting these gaps hold her back, she chose to learn. In 2014, she enrolled in the Stellenbosch Business School’s Small Business Academy, which provided her with tools to structure her business more effectively. Two years later, she joined the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise Programme, a milestone she describes as transformative. With mentorship, workshops, and funding, she gained a better grasp of financial management and was able to invest in a new filtration system, expanding her capacity to serve more swimmers.

Growth and Expansion

From a modest start of 35 swimmers, Little Mermaids now teaches 500 swimmers a week and partners with 15 schools for extramural swimming activities. Rushana employs eight permanent staff members, all from Mitchells Plain, and proudly notes that turnover growth increased by 152 percent in a single year.

Beyond financial success, her school made history by being the first heated indoor swimming center in Mitchells Plain, allowing lessons to run all year round. For the community, this achievement symbolized more than just convenience; it showed that world-class facilities could be built in their own neighborhood without needing to travel elsewhere.

Overcoming Challenges

Every business faces obstacles, and Little Mermaids Swim School was no exception. One of the toughest periods came during the Western Cape drought, when municipal water restrictions made it nearly impossible to operate. Rushana recalls the financial and emotional toll of sourcing alternative water, which strained both the school and its staff. Some employees resigned, fearing for the future.

Yet Rushana did not give up. With the guidance of her mentor from the SAB Foundation and the support of her husband and dedicated team, she found ways to adapt and survive the crisis. This experience reinforced a critical lesson for entrepreneurs: resilience, combined with a strong support network, can help businesses withstand even the harshest storms.
