A Foundation Built on Education and Intention
After matriculating, Kabelo went on to complete his BTech in Business Administration in 2013. While he did not begin his career in farming immediately, his studies shaped his understanding of business structures, planning, and financial discipline. These would become crucial skills later on.
His dream of becoming a farmer remained steady. It followed him into adulthood, and by 2017, he knew the next step would demand real immersion. In August that year, he relocated to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, the heartland of South Africa’s ostrich industry. This move marked his first major turning point.
Hands On Learning in the Ostrich Capital
In Oudtshoorn, Kabelo worked directly with ostriches and gained practical experience across the full value chain. He learned about breeding, feeding, and raising birds. He studied the slaughtering process, leather tanning, and even the delicate craft of creating feather and eggshell decorations.
This period was more than training. It rewired the way he understood business. He saw how each part of the value chain connected to the next and how efficiency, animal health, and marketing affected profitability. By the end of 2017, he could see a clear path forward.
Launching His Own Ostrich Operation
Armed with knowledge and ambition, Kabelo returned to Brits and launched his own ostrich farm in January 2018. He started with what he could access: 17 day old chicks purchased from his former employer. He transported them all the way from Oudtshoorn to his home in North West.
These early days were defined by improvisation and endurance. With no commercial infrastructure, Kabelo placed the chicks in his garage. He monitored them closely, improvised heating solutions, and ensured they had space to move. As they grew, he built a 4m by 3m structure where they could sleep safely at night. During the day, they roamed freely in the open yard.
These first efforts were not glamorous, but they were foundational. Kabelo showed that innovation often begins with working from what is immediately available, not what is ideal.

A Bold Sacrifice That Transformed the Business
As the birds grew and his understanding deepened, Kabelo reached a critical decision point. He sold his car and used the funds to purchase a 7 hectare farm equipped for ostrich breeding. This was a defining moment in his journey. He chose long term asset value over short term convenience, a mindset shared by many enduring entrepreneurs.
The new farm allowed him to scale his operation, manage bigger numbers and produce consistent quality. It also strengthened his credibility in the industry.
Breaking Into National Retail
Kabelo’s next milestone came as a result of consistency and uncompromising quality. Over the years, his slaughtered ostrich products attracted steady demand. Major retailers began sourcing his meat, and today he supplies outlets including Woolworths, Checkers, Boxer and various local butcheries.
Breaking into these markets is no small achievement. It reflects strong supply chain discipline, compliance with health and safety standards, and the ability to meet recurring demand.
