MTN Brings Financial Literacy Programme to Zandspruit Youth

MTN Brings Financial Literacy Programme to Zandspruit Youth. More than 100 young people and community members in Zandspruit have taken part in a financial literacy initiative led by MTN Group Fintech, as the company continues its efforts to promote financial education and long-term financial wellbeing through its MoMo Financial First Aid Kit programme.

The activation, held at the Emthonjeni Community Centre, focused on equipping participants with practical money management skills and providing access to resources designed to help them make informed financial decisions.

The programme formed part of MTN Group Fintech’s broader financial inclusion strategy, which combines education, digital tools and community engagement to improve financial capability.

During the activation, participants completed financial health checks, attended budgeting workshops and received financial literacy booklets covering everyday money management topics. The event also included one-on-one mentorship sessions where attendees could discuss personal financial challenges and receive practical guidance.

According to MTN Group Fintech, the initiative aimed to help participants build confidence in managing their finances while encouraging sustainable financial habits that can support their long-term wellbeing.

More than 40 MTN volunteers participated in the programme, assisting with mentorship and facilitating workshops throughout the day. Their involvement helped create an interactive learning environment where participants could engage in practical discussions about budgeting, planning and financial decision-making.

Feedback from attendees suggested that many left the programme with a better understanding of how to manage expenses, plan their finances and make more informed financial choices. Interviews with participants, later broadcast on Jozi FM, highlighted increased confidence in handling personal finances and a stronger awareness of the importance of budgeting.

Mosa Pakane, Senior Manager: Group Corporate Affairs and PR at MoMo from MTN, said financial inclusion extends beyond access to financial services.

“MTN Group Fintech believes that true financial inclusion is not just about access to services, but about empowering people with the confidence and capability to use them meaningfully,” Pakane said.

She added that the experience in Zandspruit demonstrated the value of bringing practical financial education directly into communities and providing tools that support better financial decisions over time.

Although the community activation has concluded, MTN Group Fintech said participants will continue to have access to digital financial education tools and resources, allowing them to build on the knowledge gained during the programme and continue strengthening their financial resilience.
