Uber Eats and CitiPods Launch Cape Town Courier Hub to Ease Pavement Congestion. Uber Eats and urban infrastructure provider CitiPods have launched a pilot courier hub at Constantia Village in Cape Town, providing delivery couriers with dedicated facilities while supporting efforts to improve the management of urban space.

The hub offers independent couriers working across delivery platforms free access to sheltered seating, phone charging and sanitation facilities while they wait between orders.

The initiative is intended to provide couriers with a dedicated place to wait between deliveries and reduce congestion on public pavements. It also provides a sheltered environment, particularly during Cape Town’s winter months.

The pilot forms part of Uber’s broader focus on supporting independent couriers and exploring infrastructure solutions linked to the realities of delivery work.

Ntsoaki Sibanyoni, regional general manager of Uber Eats and Delivery for sub-Saharan Africa, said couriers play an important role in connecting communities with local merchants.

Sibanyoni said the company plans to learn from the pilot and explore opportunities to expand the model through collaboration with commercial, property and community stakeholders across South Africa.

For CitiPods, the initiative demonstrates how underused urban spaces can be repurposed to provide infrastructure for workers while also benefiting surrounding communities.

CitiPods co-founder and CEO Jenny Dove said independent couriers can spend long periods on the road without access to safe, sheltered and clean spaces to take breaks between deliveries.

The company said the Constantia Village pod demonstrates how an underused space can be converted into infrastructure for couriers while contributing to a cleaner, safer and more organised surrounding environment.

The Constantia Village hub is the first pilot facility launched under the initiative.

CitiPods is inviting landowners and corporate partners to explore opportunities to host or sponsor similar facilities in other locations.

The pilot brings together technology, property and urban infrastructure considerations around the growing delivery economy.

It also highlights the need for infrastructure that accommodates the activities of independent couriers while addressing the use of shared urban spaces.

Uber Eats and CitiPods will use the pilot to assess the model and explore potential opportunities for similar facilities elsewhere in South Africa.
