Lowveld Mall Takes Top Honours at 2026 SACSC Retail Design Awards

Lowveld Mall Takes Top Honours at 2026 SACSC Retail Design Awards. The South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) has named Lowveld Mall in Mpumalanga the overall winner of its 2026 Spectrum Award for Shopping Centre Development, alongside recognising retail and restaurant projects across South Africa for their design and commercial performance.
Lowveld Mall also won the renovation and expansion category at the 2026 Retail Design & Development Awards. The 61,858m² shopping centre was designed by MDS Architecture, with Twin City Development serving as developer and owner.
Judges highlighted the redevelopment’s oversized entrance pergola features, creative ceiling and floor finishes, and contribution to transforming the existing centre. Its performance also helped distinguish it from other finalists.
The judges unanimously selected Lowveld Mall for the Spectrum Award, the programme’s overall accolade. They cited collaboration between the development, architectural and leasing teams, noting the project’s ability to deliver a strong customer experience and healthy returns despite tight budget constraints.
Garden Walk Mall in the Western Cape won the new developments category. Designed by Bar Architects and developed and owned by Moolman Group, Dorpstraat Properties and Organic Coral Investments, the 20,000m² centre was recognised for its curated tenant mix, practical planning and selective use of creative design features.
In the restaurant design category, Doppio Bistrot at Nine Yards in Parktown North, Gauteng, took the award. The 376m² venue, designed by Sketch Interior Architects and owned by Spur Corporation, was commended for reusing existing buildings to create a distinctive restaurant environment.
The store design category produced two joint winners: Chris and Alley at Ballito Lifestyle Centre in KwaZulu-Natal, and Dis-Chem at Melrose Arch in Gauteng.
Sketch Interior Architects designed the 127m² Chris and Alley store, which was recognised for its experiential approach, warm environment and quality finishes. Dis-Chem’s 842m² store, designed by TDC & Co, was praised for integrating customer service with innovative systems, clean lines and carefully considered fixtures and fittings.
The awards assess design quality, innovation, sustainability, market relevance and commercial success, recognising projects across South Africa’s retail property sector.
