Vaal River Farm Set to Become Major Off-Grid Agricultural Operation. Belle Rive Farm, owned by the De Beer family on the banks of the Vaal River, is set to receive most of its electricity from a large solar power plant and battery energy storage system.
The project, developed by RenEnergy South Africa, was 67% complete and scheduled for commissioning in October. The company said solar panel installations and mounting structures were nearing completion, alongside progress on electrical work, battery installation and medium-voltage reticulation.
The ground-mounted solar plant will have a peak capacity of 4.89MW, supported by batteries with a combined storage capacity of 20MWh.
The system is being developed to support Belle Rive’s operations across its 20km² agricultural footprint. The farm produces seed potatoes, onions, maize and pecan nuts, with electricity required for irrigation, cold rooms, packhouses and processing infrastructure.Farm owner Stanley de Beer said reliable electricity was essential to the operation.
“Our operations run across a large area of farmland. There’s no room for power interruptions when you’re managing cold storage and irrigation at this scale,” he said.
According to RenEnergy, the scale and geographic spread of the farm required a different system design from smaller commercial and industrial installations. The company said the system was developed using detailed load analysis to account for the farm’s energy requirements and varying loads.
RenEnergy business development head Juandré Pitout described the project as a showcase for energy independence in South African agriculture.
The company said larger commercial farming operations were increasingly adopting self-generation. It also noted that electricity accounts for approximately 6% of agricultural production input costs nationally, with higher costs associated with cold-chain and irrigation requirements.
Belle Rive has experienced a cumulative 45% increase in electricity tariffs over the past three years, according to the information provided by RenEnergy.
