From Local Commute to Silicon Valley: Uthutho Crowned South Africa’s Red Bull Basement Champion

One vision, one stage, and a direct ticket to the heart of global innovation. Last Friday, at the high-energy hub of Innovation City, Uthutho was officially named the 2026 National Champion of Red Bull Basement South Africa. Founded by the forward-thinking duo of Shaqeel Less and Makhi Mangxola, the startup is now clearing its path to represent the nation at the World Final in San Francisco.

Uthutho isn’t just another app; it’s a digital ecosystem designed to solve the fragmented reality of South African public transport. By integrating taxis, buses, and trains into a single, community-powered interface, the platform provides commuters with real-time data on routes and availability. It’s a solution born from necessity, aiming to make daily travel safer, smarter, and far more predictable.

“Winning this competition is phenomenal for us,” says co-founder Shaqeel Less. “It gives Uthutho the opportunity to grow from a local solution to a global platform. This pushes us to refine our prototype and bring our vision fully to life. We’re grateful for the chance to showcase what we’ve built.”

The judging panel was particularly struck by the immediate real-world impact of the project. Mixo, one of the expert panelists, noted that while the journey of refinement is ongoing, the core idea is a powerhouse. “Their solution challenged us as judges and sparked a lot of discussion,” Mixo commented. “It has real potential to scale across South Africa and even globally. This is exactly the kind of innovation we want to see.”

The Road to the Bay Area

The victory marks the beginning of an intensive Development Phase. To help evolve their concept into a polished Minimum Viable Product (MVP), Shaqeel and Makhi will be equipped with high-performance hardware, including an AMD AI laptop, alongside Microsoft Azure credits and specialized mentorship from industry titans.

The stakes get even higher from 1–3 June, when the Uthutho team joins champions from over 40 countries at the Red Bull Basement World Final in San Francisco. Over three days of elite-level pitching, they will face a global panel of venture capitalists and industry leaders. On the line? $100,000 in equity-free funding, an additional $25,000 in Azure credits, and the chance to secure ongoing guidance from Red Bull Ventures.

In an industry where equity is often the price of entry, Red Bull Basement remains a rare champion of pure innovation—teams retain 100% ownership of their ideas. For Uthutho, the leap from solving the local commute to pitching in the “Bay Area” is a testament to the power of South African grit and digital ingenuity.
