Sakhumzi Restaurant Aims To Offer Unique South African Cuisine

Sakhumzi Restaurant Aims To Offer Unique South African Cuisine. A tree where the restaurant is located was a home away from home for Sakhumzi Maqubela and his friends as it offered shade in summer, and a place where dreams could be shared and friendships created. There were always people gathered together under the tree. When the dumpies ran dry and the hunger kicked in, the aroma of delicious home-cooked food lured people from the tree and into the house. Sakhumzi found himself having to share his supper every time. Everyone put money together to buy drinks and the food was shared freely. Finally, Sakhumzi decided to formalise the shebeen and trade as he does today.

The lounge became an eating area, which soon spilled over to the bedrooms and every other part of the house. Complete with the original doors, walls, flooring and rooms, Sakhumzi Restaurant was born in 2001. Now, years later, the old home is still abuzz with people coming from Soweto, Jo’burg, Pretoria and all over the world to experience the taste of true township flavour and Ubuntu. Best of all, the tree rooted in the place where it all began is still standing strong.

The restaurant caters to local guests, national as well as international tourists who want to tantalise their taste buds with authentic African cuisine when visiting us in Soweto. The African restaurant is a family-friendly culinary destination for adults and kids of all ages who want to enjoy an authentic African cuisine on the world-famous Vilakazi Street here in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Its staff members are well-trained and knowledgeable with regards to a variety of food and beverages. All the restaurant’s departments collectively work as one to deliver a quality brand experience for guests and their families. The restaurant is located next to homes of two Nobel Prize Winners, namely Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the late former president Nelson Mandela both whom were residents of Vilakazi Street in Soweto.
