CETA Allocates More Than R600 Million To Empower The Youth And Women In The Construction Sector

CETA Allocates More Than R600 Million To Empower The Youth And Women In The Construction Sector. In a significant move towards fostering skills development and economic empowerment, the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) has set aside more than R450 million to fund a wide array of skills development and training initiatives in the construction sector across all nine provinces in South Africa.

This was announced by Malusi Shezi, the CEO of CETA at a stakeholder engagement meeting in Sandton yesterday. The meeting was attended by key stakeholders in the construction sector such as the Black Business Council in the Built Environment, the Construction Industry Development Board, training providers, government officials, and many others.

This substantial investment is set to benefit close to 4000 learners across the country, marking a pivotal step in CETA’s commitment to contribute to the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan as outlined by President Cyril Ramaphosa in the SONA recently.

“With these initiatives, we aim to address the aspirations of the SONA as set out by President Cyril Ramaphosa, to assist in alleviating unemployment, stimulate skills for the economy and job creation opportunities for young people in those communities where there are limited economic activities,” said Thabo Masombuka, the Chairperson of CETA.

The investment is broken down into two parts: the training of leaners (R234 million) and construction of new training centers (R172 million), respectively. About R106 million of the training budget will go towards paying stipends to learners – an important intervention for families where there is no income. About R172 million will go towards the construction of skills training centres Giyani, Limpopo; in Ngoje, northern KwaZulu Natal; Port Nolloth in Northern Cape and the Anene Booysen Simulation and Trade Test Centre in the Cape Agulhas in the Western Cape.

With the drive to mainstream the work of CETA, Shezi also announced the signing of Memorandum of Understanding agreements with CIDB, NYDA, GIBS, SAIBPP, various TVET Colleges to expose learners to further training and on-the-job training opportunities presented by these entities.
