Building from the Ground Up: The Lessons Behind Thabo Equipment and Tools Hire

Building from the Ground Up: The Lessons Behind Thabo Equipment and Tools Hire. When Thabo Ntswane left his hometown of Soshanguve for Polokwane to work as a civil engineer, he carried with him more than just technical skills. He carried a vision. A vision of independence, of building something that would not only sustain him but also uplift his community. That vision came to life in 2013 when he founded Thabo Equipment and Tools Hire, a brand that would grow from modest beginnings into a thriving enterprise.
Starting with Scarcity, Growing with Ingenuity
Like many first-time entrepreneurs, Thabo faced the obstacle of limited capital. Buying brand-new machinery was simply out of reach, but he refused to let that stop him. Instead, he purchased second-hand tools and equipment, repairing them with his own hands and renting them out to local construction businesses in Polokwane and nearby towns.
This decision highlights a powerful lesson: resourcefulness is often more valuable than resources. Rather than waiting until he had enough money to start perfectly, Thabo began with what he had and steadily built momentum.
The Harsh Reality of Building Trust
Thabo quickly discovered that launching a small business came with another steep challenge, credibility. Established companies already dominated the market, and clients were hesitant to place their trust in an emerging player. “People never believe in a small business so it was hard for me to compete with well established businesses,” Thabo recalls.
This reality tested his resolve but also reinforced an important entrepreneurial principle: perseverance often precedes recognition. It takes consistent service and commitment to earn trust in a competitive space.
A Turning Point with SAB Foundation
While determination kept him moving, Thabo soon realized that passion alone was not enough. He struggled with administration, finances, and basic business structures. His breakthrough came in 2016 when he applied to and was accepted into the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise Programme.
The programme became a defining moment for both him and his business. Through mentorship, workshops, and financial support, Thabo gained the tools he needed to transform his operations. He received R250,000 in funding which allowed him to purchase essential machinery, expand his services, and even venture into building and installing wendy houses.
Beyond capital, the training helped him shift his mindset. He learned to separate personal income from business revenue, properly manage taxes, and formalize his team structure. What was once a two-person operation grew into a company with 20 permanent employees in Polokwane and 15 casual staff across three additional regions.
Lessons from Growth
Thabo’s journey underscores several key takeaways for aspiring entrepreneurs:
- Start small but start smart. Buying second-hand tools was not ideal, but it was the stepping stone that allowed him to begin.
- Invest in knowledge. Without training and mentorship, Thabo admits his business would have struggled to survive. The SAB Foundation gave him the skills to scale sustainably.
- Focus beyond profit. Thabo advises that building a brand requires patience and prioritizing long-term goals over short-term gains.
- Empower others. By creating jobs, he demonstrated that entrepreneurship is not only about personal success but also about community impact.
Building a Brand that Lasts
Today, Thabo Equipment and Tools Hire stands as a symbol of grit, adaptability, and growth. From a single idea in Polokwane to an expanding operation that supports dozens of employees, Thabo’s story proves that success is built step by step.
He openly shares his final piece of advice with young entrepreneurs: find a mentor who is as passionate about your business as you are, and remain open to learning. For Thabo, mentorship turned obstacles into opportunities, and his journey shows that with the right support and determination, even the toughest beginnings can lead to sustainable success.
