Igniting Purpose from Discarded Metal: The Story of Iziko Stoves

Igniting Purpose from Discarded Metal: The Story of Iziko Stoves. For Lindokuhle Duma, entrepreneurship emerged from both tragedy and hope. Inspired by his work with youth and his training through Enactus UKZN, Lindokuhle sought a way to address two urgent challenges: substance abuse and waste. His answer was Iziko Stoves, a social enterprise founded in 2016 in Durban that would turn discarded geysers and gas cylinders into cooking stoves and braai stands, while offering a second chance to recovering substance users.

By inviting ex-abusers into the process, from production to sales, Lindokuhle created more than just a product. He forged purpose, dignity, and opportunity.

Designing with Social Impact in Mind

Iziko Stoves stands out not only for recycling scrapyard metal into useful items but for doing so through a model of empowerment. Each trainee receives hands-on entrepreneurial training, learns practical skills, and gains tools to rebuild their lives. After just one month, graduates take home the very stoves they made, along with a branded shirt and order form and are instructed to sell them within their communities to kickstart income generation.

Over two years, Iziko Stoves has positively impacted 211 substance users, with 179 managing to transform their lives completely. That’s a powerful reminder: when business models serve people, not just profits, the ripple effects are profound.

A Turning Point with SAB Foundation

Like many social impact ventures, funding and credibility were critical inflection points. Lindokuhle’s breakthrough came when Iziko Stoves earned R150,000 in funding plus R140,000 in mentoring and support through the SAB Foundation Social Innovation Awards.

This boost enabled improvements across the enterprise: Sharper product quality, better equipment, and staff expansions followed. More than a financial injection, this validation raised Iziko Stoves’ profile and helped attract partnerships and awareness.

From Local Workshop to Global Conversations

With newfound momentum, Lindokuhle’s journey continued upward. In 2017, he featured on SABC’s “Brand South Africa Play Your Part”, and more recently, he was selected to represent South African social innovators at an event in Israel. His message is universal: recovered individuals, much like the recycled metal he works with, can flourish with the right support.
