How Michanic, Mobile Mechanic SME Is Driving Nationwide Growth with Fresh Investment

Starting a business is never easy—but turning it into a success story that reshapes an industry? That takes innovation, timing, and the courage to challenge the status quo. One Johannesburg-based startup is doing just that, and it’s accelerating fast.
Meet Michanic, South Africa’s premier mobile mechanic service. Their promise is simple yet revolutionary: service any car, of any age, anywhere. Whether at home or at work, Michanic brings expert vehicle care straight to the client—no disruptions, no trips to the workshop, just convenience, transparency, and reliability.
The company’s bold vision has now gained a powerful boost. With investment from the ASISA ESD Fund, managed by Edge Growth, Michanic is set to expand beyond the five provinces it currently serves. The funding will not only scale a majority black-owned business, but also create new opportunities for mobile mechanics, enabling them to grow their operations and careers while delivering top-quality service to customers nationwide.
“We are thrilled to have successfully concluded our transaction with the ASISA ESD Fund. This partnership represents a significant milestone for Michanic as we continue to revolutionise the automotive repair industry with innovative, customer-centric solutions,” says Lesetja Dikgale, CEO and co-founder alongside Thabelo Mulelu.
The investment is more than capital—it’s a vote of confidence in Michanic’s model, which balances commercial viability with social impact. By offering fixed pricing, skilled mechanics, and on-demand services via a user-friendly app and website, Michanic has positioned itself as a trusted alternative to traditional service centers. Customers now enjoy quality service at their convenience, empowered by the “Right to Repair” regulations, which allow vehicles to be serviced anywhere without voiding warranties.
The expansion plan doesn’t stop at basic servicing. Michanic aims to roll out towing, tyre replacements, motor body repairs, auto glass fixes, and a warranties arm, all designed for on-demand access. This is part of a larger mission to empower mechanics, create jobs, and redefine automotive service delivery across South Africa.
“The successful completion of this transaction is a testament to the strength of our business model and our commitment to creating sustainable impact,” Dikgale adds.
Edge Growth shares the optimism:
“We’re excited to invest in Michanic, which has grown more than 40% year-on-year. Mobile car servicing is a no-brainer for customers, and we see tremendous potential for nationwide scaling,” says Raheem Sonday, Associate Principal at Edge Growth.
The ASISA ESD Fund, a B-BBEE investment initiative, is designed to accelerate SME growth while delivering social, environmental, and employment impact. With more than R700 million in assets under management, and nearly R600 million already committed to SMEs, it’s a major engine for economic transformation in South Africa.
As Michanic gears up for its next growth phase, one thing is clear: the mobile mechanic revolution is just getting started—and drivers across South Africa are in for a smooth ride.
