GWM introduces new 3.0-litre diesel engine for Tank 500 in South Africa. GWM has expanded the Tank 500 range in South Africa with a new 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, introducing a diesel option for the seven-seat SUV.

The four-cylinder turbodiesel produces 170kW and 620Nm and is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The diesel range consists of three derivatives, with prices starting at R849,900 and reaching R999,900.

The 3.0TD 9AT 4×2 Super Luxury is priced at R849,900, while the 3.0TD 9AT 4×4 Ultra Luxury costs R929,900. The 3.0TD 9AT 4×4 Overland is priced at R999,900.

GWM says the engine is aimed at buyers prioritising low-speed torque, towing and long-distance touring. It produces 385Nm from 1,000rpm, with maximum torque reaching 620Nm. The Tank 500 3.0 Diesel has a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes.

The Overland derivative can be specified with an auxiliary 53-litre fuel tank alongside the standard 78-litre tank. The diesel engine uses a 2,000-bar common-rail fuel-injection system, while the 4×4 models feature a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

According to GWM, the engine underwent million-kilometre test-bench testing and full-vehicle validation during development.

The diesel powertrain joins the Tank 500’s existing premium seven-seat SUV positioning. Standard equipment includes a leather interior and electrically adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions.

The SUV also features GWM’s Coffee OS 3.0 infotainment and connectivity system, which includes integrated voice control for functions such as navigation.

The addition of the diesel engine gives South African buyers three Tank 500 diesel derivatives, spanning 4×2 and 4×4 configurations and different equipment levels.

The new diesel range extends from the 4×2 Super Luxury to the 4×4 Ultra Luxury and Overland models, with the latter offering the option of additional fuel capacity.

All three models use the same 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and nine-speed automatic transmission, while their configurations and prices differ, offered in the South African diesel range.
