Vodacom, UJ and AWS Launch AI Partnership to Prepare Students for Industry Careers

Vodacom, UJ and AWS Launch AI Partnership to Prepare Students for Industry Careers. Vodacom, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have formed a strategic partnership aimed at preparing students for careers in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science through industry-focused education, practical experience and research opportunities.

Announced on 24 July, the collaboration brings together Vodacom’s AI Lab and UJ’s Centre for Applied Data Science to develop graduates equipped with the skills needed to meet the growing demands of South Africa’s and Africa’s digital economy.

The initiative is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and workplace requirements by combining classroom education with practical industry exposure. Students will have opportunities to work on real business challenges while developing technical expertise in AI and data science.

According to the partners, the programme extends beyond traditional academic training by incorporating co-designed qualifications, industry mentorship and potential employment pathways. The aim is to establish a sustainable pipeline of professionals capable of contributing to AI innovation and digital transformation across the continent.

Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub said the collaboration creates a direct link between university research and practical business applications.

He said students participating in the programme will work on real Vodacom projects, allowing them to develop solutions with practical value while gaining experience that prepares them to lead future AI initiatives.

The partnership will offer a range of learning opportunities, including short courses, postgraduate diplomas, and dedicated master’s and doctoral research programmes. Vodacom specialists and UJ academics will jointly review emerging industry needs to ensure course content remains aligned with developments in AI technologies and business requirements.

A key component of the initiative is the opportunity for master’s and PhD students to contribute to live projects alongside Vodacom’s Big Data and AI specialists. Their research will focus on addressing real business challenges, with outstanding participants potentially being considered for future opportunities within Vodacom’s AI and data teams.

Professor Tankiso Moloi, Executive Dean of the College of Business and Economics at UJ, said the collaboration demonstrates the importance of linking academic excellence with industry challenges, enabling students to develop solutions that have practical relevance for South Africa and the broader continent.

AWS will support the initiative by providing access to cloud computing infrastructure, data platforms and AI technologies used by organisations around the world. The company said the resources will enable students and researchers to build, test and refine AI solutions in real-world environments while strengthening both research outcomes and practical skills.

Through the collaboration, the three organisations aim to create graduates with the technical knowledge, industry experience and research capabilities required to contribute to the evolving AI landscape.
