Cape Winelands Airport Seeks To Alleviate Congestion At Cape Town International Airport

Cape Winelands Airport Seeks To Alleviate Congestion At Cape Town International Airport. The new Cape Winelands Airport now owned by investor Rob Hersov is well underway to becoming an alternative commercial airport that will be direct competition for the Cape Town International Airport (CTIA). Hersov and business partner Nick Ferguson bought the Fisantekraal Airport in November 2020 and renamed it Cape Winelands Airport.

The Cape Winelands Airport’s finance and operations manager, Mark Wilkinson told MyBroadband they will resurface the existing runways and build more hangars and facilities fit for purpose for the operators within the general aviation industry. The process to convert Cape Winelands Airport into a big commercial airport will take many years. According to Wilkinson this is why they are starting small.

“General aviation currently uses up valuable space and resources at the Cape Town International Airport,” said Wilkinson. He added that by the time they could operate scheduled traffic at the Cape Winelands Airport, CTIA will be bursting at its seams and the new airport will alleviate the congestion of air traffic in Cape Town. The Cape Winelands Airport is situated 14 kilometres northeast of Durbanville and is 150 hectares large. It features four runways, but only two were currently in use for aviation training and private aircraft.

Cape Winelands Airport is an ex-South African Air Force airfield built circa 1943, and was used to operate Lockheed Ventura bombers. Cape Winelands Airport now operates privately as a general flying airfield and is the preferred base for aviation training in the Cape Town region. Of the four original runways, two remain operational while the other two are used as Hollywood favourites for movie and film production.

The Cape Winelands Airport has the potential to alleviate congestion at the Cape Town International Airport as it will be the most practical alternative for those residing in the northern parts of the Western Cape. Rob Hersov is a South African entrepreneur and private investor, currently based in Cape Town (after 31 years in the US, in Europe and the UK). He serves as Chairman of Invest Africa (founder), Chairman of African Capital Investments (founder), Chairman of AltCapInvest (founder), advisory board Chairman of VistaJet and Chairman of AON Africa.
